Sustainability Symposium 2011:
"Sustainability: Is It More Than We Think?"

The Explorer Connection at La Salle University will host its first ever Sustainability Symposium on March 19, 2011 as the culminating event in its year-long Sustainable Development Series. This event is also a proud part of La Salle Heritage Week 2011: Celebrating the Legacy. "Sustainability: Is It More than We Think?" is the first in a five-part series of sustainability symposia at La Salle.

This March 2011 symposium will emphasize an interdisciplinary framework for examining and practicing sustainability, drawing on key issues of sustainable development from a local, national and global focus. This initial symposium is meant to be an exchange of ideas on the current state of sustainable development and what it means to adopt a sustainability mindset. What follows are four main goals of this inaugural symposium:

Sustainability Symposium 2011 Goals:

  1. inform participants (including the La Salle community) about the current state of sustainability and address misnomers about sustainable development
  2. provide a context for understanding the components of sustainable development from multiple disciplines
  3. challenge people’s notions of sustainability and push them beyond their current (likely incomplete) understanding of sustainability and sustainable development
  4. set in motion a discussion on the practical, social, professional and academic implications for sustainability and sustainable thinking (a reflection on the current reality of sustainable development and what we should be moving toward)... providing the foundation for subsequent symposiums that progressively build upon one another in the years to follow.
